UNITED NATIONS Commission on Science and Technology for Development (UNCSTD)

Director: Fayyaz Razi

Topic: Data Privacy and Cyber Crime

Founded in 1979, the United Nations Commission on Science and Technology for Development was created in 1979 to deal with issues at the crossroads of science, technology, development, and sustainability. The work of this committee is especially relevant today due to data privacy and cybercrime concerns in a world increasingly integrated with the use of artificial intelligence (AI). To this end, in this committee, delegates will firstly be tasked with creating frameworks to incentivize companies to protect the personal data of their consumers. Frameworks should also focus on regulating the sale of personal data from one entity to another for purposes outside of their original intended use. In the era of rapidly advancing AI, concerns around data privacy protection are becoming of increased relevance. Secondly, delegates will also be tasked with addressing ethical concerns with the use of AI in surveillance and law enforcement. Delegates are expected to work collaboratively, diplomatically, and consider varying perspectives while attempting to address these issues, for the greater good of humanity.
